Latin American Herald Tribune - Gunmen Spring Kidnapping Gang’s Leader in Northern Mexico: "Gunmen helped the leader of a kidnapping gang escape while he was being transported to prison in Ciudad Juarez, a border city in northern Mexico, prosecutors said.
Ernesto Alfredo Piñon de la Cruz managed to get away when the gunmen attacked the prison convoy on Monday with gunfire and grenades, the Chihuahua state Attorney General’s Office said.
Piñon de la Cruz, who appears on a list of inmates considered extremely dangerous, was being taken back to prison after a court hearing, the AG’s office said.
“We do not have complete information, but two or three inmates apparently died,” AG’s office spokesman Arturo Sandoval said.
Initial reports said the gunmen used several vehicles to attack the convoy, firing grenades at police patrol cars to neutralize their response.
One of the other prisoners being transported with Piñon de la Cruz also apparently managed to escape, officials said."
